Towards a Computational Formalization of Natural Language Semantics

چکیده

\ I~I~RODUCTION The problem of explicating the meaning of natural language discourse and how this meaning is obtained has been of central importance to the study of philosophy since the time of Aristotle. This problem has continued to perplex philosophers, linguists, psychologists, and other academicians right up to this very day, such perplexity manifesting itself in disputes such as nominalism vs. realism, behaviorism vs. mentalism, logical positivism vs. the "ordinary-language" approach, and structuralism vs. trans-formationalism. Basic to this perplexity has been the lack of an adequate set of tools with which to formalize meaning in natural language, resulting in a basic split between those who use existing tools to produce formalizations that are oversimplified and inadequate and those who attempt to account for the full complexity of natural language but, in doing so, abandon any attempt at formalization. Clearly, any move toward providing a more powerful set of tools with which to formalize the semantics of natural languages will have implications that will reverberate through a variety of academic disciplines. A formalization of natural language semantics that is keyed to the computer will have a variety of very practical applications as well. Two decades of research in machine translation have failed to produce effective systems, chiefly because machines have not yet been able to duplicate the translator's function of understanding the material in the source language and then restating it in the target language. Once computers are capable of analyzing natural language to a depth where it becomes possible to mechanically determine equivalence of meaning in context of statements in two different languages, and capable of generating well-formed natural-language discourse from such an analysis, mechanical translation of scientific and other expository

Towards a formalization of UML Class Structure in PVS

The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a language for specifying, visualizing and documenting object-oriented systems, and serves as a standard OO modeling notation. As the semantics of UML constructs is given informally in natural language, it is, for example, difficult to formally reason about correctness of a system design. Formal methods provide a rigor that is lacking in most of OO modelin...

Proceedings of the Eleventh ESSLLI Student Session

Standard Arabic (SA) is an extremely rich natural language that has unfortunately received very little interest within computational linguistics literature. We propose in this paper to explore this fertile ground and show the first steps towards the formalization of Arabic syntax and semantics by means of MultiModal Categorial Grammars. We will particularly focus on the analysis of some phenome...

What is an Answer? That is the Question

Several notions of answerhood are formalized using a proof system, i.e., a Pure Type System (PTS). Our starting point is a definition of answerhood which was proposed in the mid-eighties by Groenendijk and Stokhof (G&S). This definition rests on two concepts which, in the past fifteen years, have become central to the trade of formal semantics: context change and contextdependence. Our formaliz...

Formal Semantics for Property-Property Relations in SEAM Visual Language: Towards Simulation and Analysis of Visual Specifications

SEAM is an enterprise architecture method that defines a visual language for modeling. Our goal is to provide formal semantics for SEAM. Model simulation, model comparison, and refinement verification are practical benefits we expect from this formalization. This paper complements the existing SEAM semantics by formalizing property-property relations. This formalization is based on the theory o...

Situational Investigation of Presupposition

This paper gives a formal theory of presupposition using situation semantics developed by Barwise and Perry, We will slightly modify Barwise and Perry's original theory of situation semantics so that we can deal with non-monotonic reasonings which are very important for the formalization of presupposition in natural language. This aspect is closely related to the formalization of incomplete kno...
